SDSU Georgia Student Clubs Make the Most of Virtual Events

SDSU Georgia’s student life is as vibrant as ever in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. If anything, the shift to digital events has actually increased student engagement in club events. Our clubs have been actively organizing activities throughout the semester. 

Math, Physics, and Quantum Mechanics Club

In addition to holding regular virtual lectures on advanced subjects, Math, Physics, and Quantum Mechanics Club hosted a What? Where? When? virtual competition on December 6th, 2020. Nine teams of five students participated in the event. Each team had to answer thirty questions relating to math or physics. They had three minutes for each question and the event was moderated by a team composed of club leaders and volunteers.

First prize and 500 GEL went to the team GWORD. After a tiebreaker round, second place and a prize of 350 GEL went to the team SPEEDRUNNERS, with SQUAD 7 taking third place and a 150 GEL prize.

Board Game and Chess Club

Board Game and Chess Club has organized another virtual Chess Tournament. The event will take place in the spring semester and already has 24 students registered to compete!

Personal Wellness Club

Personal Wellness Club created a space for students to learn self-care techniques and share their struggles and successes in their weekly Casual Talk meetings. In addition to their regular meetings, Personal Wellness Club also hosted a conversation with a psychologist, Meri Gelashvili on October 7th, 2020.

Google Developers Club

The Google Developers Club organized two events during the fall semester. The first was held on September 26, 2020. The event was called A Beginner Software Engineer’s Guide to the Industry with Merab Tato Kutalia as the featured guest speaker.

They also organized a panel with current interns at Google, discussing their experiences working with the company. It featured three students working on Computer Science Masters Degrees at the Technical University of Munich and current Google interns.

The speakers were Lukas Bonauer, a three-time Google intern with experience working on security infrastructure, corporate travel, and YouTube, Viviana Sutedjo, a returning intern working on Google Lens, and Jonathon Mengedoht, a first-time intern working on Google Chrome.

Although it is impossible for our students to come together in person right now, they have taken the initiative and are forging new connections, both personally and professionally, through virtual club events.
