Sr. Associate Dean
Dr. Mahasweta Sarkar serves as Senior Associate Dean of SDSU’s Global Campus and is a Professor in
the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at San Diego State University (SDSU). She earned her Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from the University of California, San Diego, and began her career as a Senior Scientist at SPAWAR (now NAVWAR) before joining SDSU in 2006.
Dr. Sarkar’s research spans wireless communication networks with a focus on AI-driven MAC layer design for applications in precision agriculture, healthcare systems, wireless neurotechnology, and brain–computer interfaces. She has authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications, holds a U.S. patent, and has contributed to securing more than $100 million in extramural funding, primarily from the National Science Foundation and other federal agencies, mentoring 70+ post-doctoral, doctoral and masters dissertations both as primary advisor and in collaboration with international institutions. Her work advances frontier technologies while expanding access to STEM for underserved and underrepresented communities.
As the Senior Associate Dean of Global Campus, she leads a large, multi-vertical academic innovation enterprise spanning online and hybrid degree programs, Professional and Continuing Education (PaCE) certificates, global engagement, instructional design, student success infrastructure, corporate partnerships, international operations, specialized services, and SDSU’s transnational degree operations in Tbilisi, Georgia. Her career has been defined by expanding access, scaling workforce aligned education, globally extending U.S. public higher education, and generating sustainable revenues through innovation
Dr. Sarkar has received SDSU’s Distinguished Faculty Award, the President’s Leadership Award, and the Faculty Excellence Award in Diversity and Inclusion. She is also a Fulbright Scholar, hosted at India’s premier institution, IIT Madras and PSG, Coimbatore.
