Leri Tavadze

Leri Tavadze holds a PhD in History and has served as an Assistant Professor at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) since 2012. Additionally, Dr. Tavadze has been a history professor at San Diego State University Georgia since 2015.

In 2012, he successfully defended his dissertation, “Byzantine Imperial Titulature in Georgia.” He has authored more than 100 books, articles, encyclopedia entries, and reviews. His published works include:

  • “Magistros in Georgia and the Georgian Magistroi in Byzantium” (2016)
  • “Kvirike III the Great” (2020)
  • “Georgia in the Eighth Century: A Political History” (2020)
  • “Korepiskopos and King: A Political History of Kakheti from the Eighth to Twelfth Centuries” (2022)

Dr. Tavadze has contributed to several research projects, including:

  • “Georgia and the Rest of the World”
  • “Online English-Georgian Catalogue of Georgian Numismatics”
  • “The Georgian Fortresses of Tao-Klarjeti”
  • “Georgia Between Muslim World and Eurasian Steppe (Political and Economic Relations in the 7th–10th Centuries)”

His research interests encompass Late Antiquity and the medieval history of Georgia, Georgian-Byzantine political and institutional relations, the Eastern Roman zone of integration, medieval political thought, world-systems, and various issues of social and political history.
